Will your sofa fit through the door?
Put in the sofa’s measurements and the door’s. You’ll see whether it goes through flat, on its end, or not at all, and what to do next.
The sofa
Measure the widest points. If the feet unscrew, measure without them.

Diagonal depth: lay a ruler from the top of the back to the front of the arm, then measure from the bottom back corner up to the ruler.
The way in
Measure the door with it fully open. Stair turns and lift doors are often narrower than the front door.

How we work it out
Where the numbers come from
- Flat through the door. A sofa is carried on its back or side, so the number that matters is its slimmest side: depth or height, whichever is smaller. We add 2 cm for blankets and hands.
- On its end. If it is too wide flat, it can often be stood on end and turned through. Then the diagonal depth is what has to clear the door.
- The whole route. The tightest point decides it: a stair turn, a landing or a lift door. Put that in as the tightest gap if it is narrower than the door.
- When it will not go. Some sofas come apart: arms and backs unbolt, feet unscrew. If not, the other way in is through a window or balcony.
