How we work it out

Where the numbers come from

  • Van space. A small van holds about 3–6 m³ and a 3.5-tonne Luton about 18–19 m³ (Volkswagen, Ford and Enterprise published figures). We count a little less, because furniture never stacks perfectly.
  • Item sizes. Typical sizes used by removal firms, with a medium moving box at about 0.1 m³. Big or unusual furniture can be larger, so measure anything you are unsure of.
  • Crew. Our small van comes with the driver, who helps load. With a sofa, wardrobe, bed or white goods we suggest a helper too. Every Luton comes with two helpers.
  • Price. Straight from our rate card: two-hour minimum, then hourly. Use the cost calculator for the hours your move needs.
